13 SECONDARY SCHOOLS OPEN FOR 2010 SCHOOL YEAR: PROFICA ASSISTS THE GDE IN THE FIGHT AGAINST SCHOOL SHORTAGES IN GAUTENG. Profica boasts the delivery of 13 secondary schools to the various communities around Gauteng Province, making a big dent on school shortages in the province. The project’s success has translated into over 12,000 learners being accommodated by the start of the 2010 school year and benefiting parents and community members as they use the facilities for other community functions. Profica are the Principal Agents and Project Managers employed by the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) for their Accekerated Schools Delivery Initiative.  Profica succeeded against enormous site specific and technical challenges associated with geotechnical issues, discovery of graves on some sites, and community issues, to construct and deliver 13 out the 16 schools. Two of the schools will be delivered by April 2010 and the last one by December 2010. The 16 No. 3,500 m², single-storey schools (excluding courtyards and sport facilities), boasts 28 classrooms each with laboratories, home economics, restaurants, fully landscaped courtyards with irrigation system, water pressure boosting system, rain water harvesting systems, and community vegetable gardens. The programme does not only provide decent learning facilities but also assists local emerging contractors to up their skills to compete favourably in the industry in addition to providing short term employment to the surrounding communities.
